About

Ten years, 520 brands, one change of direction.

Most agency about-pages are written as though the company arrived fully formed. This one is the actual sequence — including the part where we were being given awards for work we were already moving away from.

Johannesburg from an elevated vantage at dusk — Rosebank or Sandton skyline, warm lights coming on against a cooling sky. Establishes where the work is made without resorting to a generic office interior.

A digital agency in Johannesburg

futr started as most agencies start: one person, a laptop, and clients who needed something built. South African businesses, mostly small, across every sector you can think of — dentistry, fire protection, logistics, contract manufacturing, retail.

Why you started, in one or two lines of your own.

This is the only part of the page a reader will assume is ghost-written unless it sounds like you. Worth writing badly and leaving it than writing it well and leaving it generic.

The volume years

520+ brands. 452+ projects. That volume is not a boast — it is the reason the work is any good. When you have rebuilt the same broken thing across two hundred businesses in twenty sectors, you stop treating each brief as novel and start recognising the four or five failures that actually recur.

It also teaches something less comfortable. At that scale you cannot hold it all.

Over the ten years I cannot remember all of them. My job is purely to focus on the next best project, and to keep pushing the quality and standards of our work.

Awarded for the wrong thing

Two national industry awards arrived in consecutive years: Top Social Media Agency (MEA Business Awards, 2022), and Top Digital Marketing Agency (Business Innovators Awards, 2023).

Both describe a marketing agency. By the time the second one landed, the work that was genuinely moving our clients’ numbers had stopped being campaigns. It was the systems underneath them — the website that could actually take the order, the automation that removed a person from the middle of a process, the migration that did not lose thirteen thousand customers. Campaigns amplify for as long as you pay for them. Systems compound.

Incorporated as a technology group

The business was formalised as FUTR Technology Group (Pty) Ltd, registration 2023/534929/07. The wording was the point. Not a marketing agency, not a studio — a technology group that designs.

The name carries the same argument. Forward-thinking, because we design for where a market is going rather than only today’s brief. Unfiltered, because a partner who will not challenge a weak assumption is an expensive pair of hands. Timeless, because foundations should evolve rather than expire. Results, because beautiful work that changes nothing is decoration.

Outward

futr.co.za continues to serve the South African market. futragency.com exists because of something we kept noticing in international work: the gap between what a project costs in London or New York and what it actually requires is enormous, and very little of that gap is skill. It is structure — account layers, project coordination, floor space, the new-business machine. All of it recovered on every invoice.

We are built the other way round. Two technical owners who do the work, a specialist network engaged per engagement, and the coordination absorbed by our own systems rather than billed as hours. The people who pitch are the people who build, because there is nobody else for it to be.

Costing less is a consequence of that structure. It is not the pitch, and it does not appear before the work does.

The moment you decided to go international — a specific project or conversation, if there was one.

A named trigger beats a stated ambition. Kahindo, Bahati and nogrowus are all New York brands already on the record if one of those was the turning point.

What we will not do.

The list is short and we have lost work to every line on it.

  • Guarantee advertising, ranking, lead or sales results.
  • Quote a price before we understand the scope.
  • Publish your work, name or numbers without written permission.
  • Put a junior on your project because the budget is smaller.
  • Hand over a build we are the only people who can maintain.
